Mary, Full of Grace
The story of the young woman who said yes to God — and became the mother of Jesus
"Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God."
— Luke 1:30
In a small town called Nazareth, there was a young woman named Mary. She was engaged to a kind carpenter named Joseph, and she spent her days praying, working, and waiting for her wedding day.
One ordinary afternoon, something extraordinary happened.
An angel appeared to her. His name was Gabriel, and he came straight from God with a message unlike any message ever delivered before.
“Hello, Mary. God is very pleased with you!” said Gabriel.
Mary was confused and a little frightened. What could this mean?
“Don’t be afraid,” Gabriel said gently. “You are going to have a baby boy. You will name him Jesus. He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High God.”
Mary took a deep breath. She had so many questions. She didn’t fully understand how this could happen. But she trusted God with her whole heart.
She said: “I am God’s servant. Let it happen just as you have said.”
Those are perhaps the bravest, most faithful words anyone has ever spoken. With just one “yes,” everything changed. The Son of God would enter the world as a tiny, helpless baby — and Mary would be his mother.
She would be there when he was born in the manger at Bethlehem, rocking him to sleep in the straw. She would teach him his first prayers. She would watch him grow from a baby to a boy to a man. She would be there at the end too — standing close, even when it was heartbreaking.
When Jesus was a boy, he and Mary and Joseph went to the temple in Jerusalem. On the way home, they realized twelve-year-old Jesus wasn’t with the group. They hurried back and found him in the temple, calmly talking with the scholars. “We were so worried!” Mary told him. And the Bible says that she “treasured all these things in her heart.”
That is a beautiful picture of Mary: a mother who paid attention. Who wondered. Who kept all the precious moments close.
In our faith, we honor Mary because of her extraordinary yes. We ask her to pray for us, just as we might ask a dear and trusted friend to pray. She knows what it is to need courage. She knows what it means to say yes to God even when the path ahead is unknown.
Hail Mary, full of grace.
