Saint Francis and the Animals

How a young Italian man gave up his riches to live simply with God — and became the patron saint of animals and nature

Saint Francis and the Animals

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them."

— Matthew 6:26

A long time ago in Italy, there lived a young man named Francis. His father was a wealthy cloth merchant, and Francis grew up with fine clothes, plenty to eat, and lots of friends.

But one day, something changed in his heart.

He felt God calling him to give away everything he owned, to help the poor, and to live simply — just like Jesus had. His father was furious. His friends thought he had gone mad. But Francis felt happier than he had ever been.

Francis and his brothers wore rough brown robes tied with rope belts. They walked barefoot through the countryside, singing and praying, helping the sick, and building crumbling old churches stone by stone with their own hands.

And the animals loved him.

The birds would land on his arms and shoulders and sing while he prayed. Once, Francis preached a sermon to a whole flock of birds perched in the trees, and they listened quietly, turning their heads from side to side. When he finished, they flew off in all directions — as if carrying his words to every corner of the world.

There is a famous story about a ferocious wolf that was terrorizing a village near a town called Gubbio. Everyone was terrified of it. But Francis went out to meet the wolf alone, speaking to it as a brother. “Brother Wolf,” he said gently. The wolf came to him, bowed its head, and laid its paw in his hand.

Francis saw all of creation — the sun, the moon, the wind, the water, the birds, and the beasts — as brothers and sisters, all made by the same loving God.

He wrote a beautiful song called the Canticle of the Sun, praising God through all of nature: “Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures…”

We celebrate Saint Francis on October 4th — the day many churches hold a special blessing of the animals, in memory of the man who taught us to love and care for every creature God made.
