Jonah and the Whale
A man who tried to run away from God — and the giant fish that gave him a second chance
"When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord."
— Jonah 2:7
God had an important job for a man named Jonah. “Go to the great city of Nineveh,” God said, “and tell the people there to stop doing wrong and turn back to me.”
But Jonah did not want to go. So instead of obeying, he ran in the opposite direction! He hurried to the seaside, hopped on a boat, and sailed far out to sea — as if he could hide from God.
While Jonah slept below deck, a tremendous storm blew up. The wind roared and the waves crashed, and the sailors were terrified the boat would sink. Jonah knew the storm was because he had run from God. “Throw me into the sea,” he told them, “and it will grow calm.”
The moment Jonah went into the water, the storm stopped. And then God sent something amazing — an enormous fish, as big as a whale, that opened its great mouth and swallowed Jonah whole.
For three days and three nights, Jonah sat inside the belly of the giant fish. And there, in the dark, he finally prayed. “I’m sorry, Lord,” he said. “Thank you for saving me. I will obey you.”
God heard Jonah’s prayer. He told the great fish to swim to shore, and the fish gently spat Jonah out onto the dry sand — safe and sound.
This time, Jonah went straight to Nineveh and shared God’s message. And the whole city listened and turned back to God.
Jonah’s story reminds us that we can’t really run away from God — and that’s good news, because he never gives up on us. Even when we make a wrong turn, God is ready to give us another chance.
